Sunday School / Nursery

St. John’s has a solid and well-attended Sunday School that plays a pivotal role in the faith formation of our youngsters.  Our Sunday School teachers are very committed to the program and many of them have been teaching for years.

Nursery care for infants through age three is available starting at 9:30 am on Sundays.

During the school year, Sunday School classes begin at 9:30 am.  The children join their families in Church at the Peace and Offertory during the later Eucharist.

Advent  Sundays
Beginning November 29th, we have four Sundays of preparation for Christmas.
A Wreath is hung in the church, and each Sunday one or more of the candles are lighted, to remeind us of the coming light of the Jesus. On the first Sunday, little wreaths the chidlren have made in Sunday school will be blessed and taken for prayers at Sunday dinner in our homes.

Each year the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum moves through four units:

  • Fall - the Old Testament stories
  • Later Fall - Jesus tells parables
  • Late Winter - Jesus’ story and our own faith
  • Spring - The life of the church in sacraments and action

Over the course of three years, these units cover the basic stories of God’s people in the Bible, Jesus' teachings, our faith in relation to what Jesus did, and how we live as Christians together in the Church.

The curriculum combines some crafts and art, take home cards and pictures, lessons, as well as in-class projects.  Some of the art and pictures used are from great religious art, exposing the children to the expression of believers in many times and places.

Every Fall youngsters register to attend a Sunday School class but newcomers are always welcome to enroll children at any time. In the Summer we have a more informal time of crafts, stories and projects. Different parishioners sign-up to teach throughout the Summer.
